In the Foothills of Unalakleet, AK
Unalakleet, Alaska is not near any mountains. But, it does have many
hills which surround it. It is back here that the caribou wander, and also
where the iditarod dog racers travel on their way to Nome. The best way
to get out into the hills is by snowmachine (snowmobiles), which the chief
mode of transportation in the winter. Because there are no roads which lead
into or out of Unalakleet, traveling to these back hills is often the only way
to feel like one is "getting away" from town. It is over hills like these that
many Alaskans will travel for three hours or more on their snowmachines to get
to the nearest town. One thing is certain though, it sure is beautiful!
