Salmon Drying Racks
Much like the caribou hanging out to dry, these are salmon. Drying racks
like these can be found all over Alaskan villages, and are used quite often.
Here you can see some salmon, which is cut open and hung over individual poles
to dry out. Once dry, the salmon looks like dried jerky, and is also eaten that way.
I should point out that some people choose to freeze their salmon, and then eat it as
you would any fish. Both methods are popular. It is a little know secret that the
river in Unalakleet has a fantastic salmon run where many of the gian fish can be caught
at one time. This delicious food is also free when caught!
