This is a picture of what could be called a "traditional Alaskan craft". This is a doll carved from ivory and then clothed with seal fur. This kind of artwork is common in ocean villages. This particular doll was carved in Shishmaref. It was being sold in one of the two grocery stores on the island for around $60. While this kind of handcrafted work can be found in Anchorage and Nome, it is cheapest to buy in the villages where they were made. As one might imagine, different villages have reputations for the kind of work each produces. For example, some of the best ivoy carvings come from Gambell, Alaska. Grass baskets, on the other hand, should be bought in Stebbins, Alaska.
